Zero Conditional

Zero Conditional

The zero conditional is used to express universal truths, scientific facts, habits, or routines. It describes a cause-and-effect relationship that is always true. If the condition is met, the result will inevitably occur.

When to use it:

  • General truths and facts: If you mix blue and yellow, you get green.
  • Scientific principle: If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
  • Giving instructions (using the imperative in the result clause): If the doorbell rings, don’t open the door.
  • Describing habits or routines: If I have time in the morning, I exercise.

Grammatical structure
The fundamental structure is: If + Condition Clause (in Present Simple), Result Clause (in Present Simple).

Key punctuation rule:

  • A comma (,) is used when the sentence begins with If.
  • No comma is used if the result clause comes first.

1. Affirmative form

If + Personal Noun + Verb in Present Simple + , + Personal Noun + Verb in Present Simple.

Inverted order (without a comma):
Personal Noun + Verb in Present Simple + if + Personal Noun + Verb in Present Simple.

2. Negative form

Negation in the Present Simple is formed with don’t or doesn’t followed by the verb in its base form.

If + Personal Noun + don't/doesn't + Verb in simple form + , + Personal Noun + don't/doesn't + Verb in simple form.

Inverted order (without a comma):
Personal Noun + don't/doesn't + Verb in simple form + if + Personal Noun + don't/doesn't + Verb in simple form.

3. Interrogative form

Do/Does + Personal Noun + Verb in simple form + if + Personal Noun + Verb in Present Simple + ?

4. WH- Questions

Wh- word + do/does + Personal Noun + Verb in simple form + if + Personal Noun + Verb in Present Simple?

Examples

  • Affirmative (+): If Tom wakes up early, he goes for a run.
Si Tom se despierta temprano, sale a correr.

Negative (-): If they don't take the bus, they don't arrive on time.
Si ellos no toman el autobús, no llegan a tiempo.

Interrogative (?): If Sarah finishes work early, what does she do?
Si Sarah termina el trabajo temprano, ¿qué hace?
