 1.-A-An

The differences between A and An have the same meaning. A and An are indefinite articles. The differences depend on the sound at the beginning of the following word.


When the word begins with a consonant sound, A is used.

Example:

A book.

Un libro


When the next word begins with a vowel sound, An is used.

Example:

An apple.

Una manzana


The letter sound is important.

An uncle, but a university.

Un tío, pero una universidad


This rule applies to all words after A or An (including adjectives, adverbs, etc.).

A cold day.

Un día frio


An easy lesson.

Una lección fácil 


2.-Definite article-THE

We use The with:

    1. A singular or plural noun when it is clear/obvious what we are talking about, whether it is a person or a thing.

Examples:

There is a lamp in my bedroom

Hay una lampara en mi habitación 


The lamp is next to the desk

La lampara está al lado del escritorio 


The computer is on the table

La computadora está en la mesa 


    2. Anything we immediately identify with.

Examples:


We watched the new Brad Pitt movie last night

Anoche vimos la nueva película de Brad Pitt


The sun is shining brightly today


The moon looks beautiful tonight


    3. Musical instruments (the violin, the guitar, the drums, the flute, the picolo)

Examples:

She plays the piano

Ella toca el piano 


I play the guitar

Yo toco la guitarra


My mom plays the violin

Mi mamá toca el violín 


    4. Something that is unique or there is only one

Examples:

-The sun

El sol


-The moon

La luna


3.-No article

We will use the no article:

1. When we refer to general, plural, or uncountable nouns, we will not use the article "the."

Examples:

Religion is an important issue

La religión es un tema importante 


Mexican food is spicy

La comida mexicana es picante 


Cats are independent animals

Los gatos son animales independientes


2. Names of people, books, and plays (unless it is part of a title)

Examples:

I have read Romeo and Juliet

He leído Romeo y Julieta 


Maria is going to the concert tonight

María va al concierto esta noche 


Jonathan plays the guitar very well

Jonathan toca la guitarra muy bien


3. Towns and cities

-Tianguistengo town


-Montana


-Vietnam


Except the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, the Philippines


4. Lakes, individual islands, continents, or mountains

Lake Victoria


Jamaica


Asia


Mount Fuji


5. Planets

Mars

Marte


Jupiter

Júpiter


Saturn

Saturno


6. Sports or Games

Soccer

Futbol


Tennis

Tenis


Skiing

Esquiar


7. Meals


Breakfast
